Short hair and cloche hats became very popular in the 1920’s. The cloche hat let everyone know you had short hair and so showed you were fashionable. The cloche hat even changed the body’s posture since it was pulled far over the eyes. With the eyes just under the brim women had to hold their heads at an upward angle to see where they were going. Unlike times past, foreheads were unfashionable in 1920s. The French milliner Caroline Reboux is thought of as the hats original creator. Most were made of felt which gave a tight fit and decorated with minimal accessories. Cloche hats were first initially seen as a ‘shocking’ and an almost scandalous fashion statement but once they become commonplace they symbolized feminine style and helped define the Flapper era.
